Dana W Ball ArtistStatement

My father was an artist, and as a young boy, I would spend hours sitting behind him watching as he applied color to canvas. I marveled at each brush stroke – color next to color, color on top of color, and color on texture. It was a mysterious process and instilled in me the desire to discover my own.
I chase contrast, abhor symmetry and reject perfection. The process begins with a concept – at times vague, at times distinct – and involves discovery, observation and alteration. The process ends with a visual that is visceral, intuitive and open to interpretation.
Contrast is impactful. It shakes us and proves we’re alive. We are drawn to it – male/female, dark/light, smooth/rough, hard/soft, mac/pc, liberal/conservative, east coast/west coast. My goal is to invoke either disdain or admiration and hopefully very little of what lays in between.
